Living on 8 acres for 30 years has been both bliss and torment. Now that I'm retired, I really want some garden space with veggies and flowers. However, the deer who frequent the yard sneak around and eat many things! Who knew that lavendar is one of the items they (supposedly dislike). So...today I planted four lavendar plants surrounding the birdbath. At dinner, looking out the window into the backyard, I caught sight of two dear deer, munching on grass and some of the apple leaves (they had to stand on tiptoe). I held my breath as they passed by the birdbath...

- I retired from teaching first and second grade four years ago. I've had a wonderful time, exploring my favorite arts and crafts (there are many), and traveling to art retreats. My husband, Dave, retired last May from his job teaching computer science at our local community college -College of the Redwoods. We are both loving the freedom of having "an endless summer" to share together. We also love our property of 8 acres and have lived here in Fortuna for 30 years. Our children grew up, went to college and decided that small town life was not for them. Matt and his wife, Julie, live in Chicago, Illinois, where Julie teaches anthropology at University of Chicago, and Matt is an internet technologist for Columbia College Chicago. Our daughter, Mia, her husband, Greg and our two year old granddaughter, Lindsay, live in Champaign, Illinois, where Greg is a video game producer for Volition and Mia is fortunate enough to be able to stay home and be a full time Mom. We enjoy visiting everyone in Illinois - but we love Humboldt County. Surrounded by pastures, redwood trees, and the ocean nearby - we are usually out and about, exploring and hiking the lovely northwest.

We have some friends who live on Vashon Island and I was astounded that they have to "deer proof" everything about their yard and garden.
